Steve Earle @ the Woody Guthrie Conference and Concert 9/22/12
Steve was spot on as usual and showed his devotion to the late great Woody Guthrie but it was his own "Christmastime In Washington" that set the mood for the rest of the show. By name-checking woody along with Emma Goldman and John Brown, Steve wears his politics on his sleeve but he never had a problem making his opinion heard.

Judy Collins_Woody Guthrie Conference 9/22/12
Просмотров 29611 лет назад
The always elegant Judy Collins appeared at the afternoon panel and opened the evening concert. Her memories of being introduced to Woody's music through a mutual friend and of hearing "This Land Is Your Land" for the first time are touching and her audience sing-a-long of "Deportees" made for a wonderful event. As with Billy, her storytelling overtakes the songs but are worth every second. Onc...

Billy Bragg has been one of my favorite artists of the past quarter century. I was lucky to have worked with him on the start of his first major US tour in 1987 and found him to be a wonderful of a person as his music and politics make him out to be. While working on a project in London over a decade later, I ran into him on the train. Just last Saturday, I ran into him on the street in Greenwi...

The closing number from Bettye's Barnes & Noble Union Square CD and Book signing on September 28, 2012. Her stories of growing up in Detroit in the shadows of Motown were funny, a little bit sad but always engrossing. Her three songs with only a piano accompaniment were incredibly moving. The woman is a national treasure.

D. J. Fontana Talks About His Years With Elvis
Просмотров 205 тыс.12 лет назад
D. J. Fontana played drums behind Elvis in concerts, on TV and in the movies for fourteen years. In this 1999 interview, he reveals some aspects of his Elvis years that have not been told before or since. His descriptions and attitude about Col. Tom Parker and the Memphis "Mafia" are telling in the context of the times. Life for the original musicians, Scotty Moore, Bill Black and D. J. should ...

Kate Taylor At Mindy Jostyn's Memorial at The Bitter End, NYC
Просмотров 3 тыс.13 лет назад
This magnificent performance by the lovely Kate Taylor was part of the Memorial intimate evening with Mindy's friends, family and the brood of musicians and artists who loved her. When Kate sang this - I cried for the second time that night. The first was when Phoebe Snow sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and just walked off the stage and headed home.
Beatles In Cleveland, WIXY

I received a copy of this bizarre piece of film 32 years ago from a Beatle-collector friend. There is no backstory or anything i can gather from the web. Evidently the concert started and shortly a riot ensued. As the Beatle were being led back into the trailer behind the stage, someone slugs John Lennon! Brian is seen pulling each one of the boys into the safety of the trailer but it is obviou...

Edward Albee_On Carson McCullers

Mr. Albee presents a different, more balanced, view of Carson than even those closer to her. His observations as a collaborator are spot on. It is amazing during the two decades of research and filming interviews with those who loved, liked, admired and hated her, a fairly well-rounded individual emerges. Carson knew better than most that one can't be loved by everyone all the time. One thing t...

This is a video by a band that deserves to be remembered - Mambo X. Hailing from Albany, NY and active between 1984-1989, the core band members: vocalist Erin O'Hara and guitarists Seth Kaufman and Mitch Rozen played and entertained with a fiery mixture of African-influenced dance music, pop stylings and, thanks to Ms. O'Hara, a lyrical content that combined social, political and religious view...

Would he have made it out of Memphis? Your joking right? If the Beatles can have 3 rhythm guitars a average drummer and OK vocals would they a have made it out of Liverpool? What a stupid question. Would Scott, Bill and J.D be famous without Elvis? NO. And to put things right: It was Elvis that paid the 3 to keep them because Parker didn't think they were needed, and that's the fact. Your a joke. Elvis was always going to make it, but your to blind to know talent.

Listening to the Richards biography by Victor Bockris about the details of this session. When Levon decided to call up Keith, Scotty remarked, “You watch, I’m gonna drink that SOB under the table.” Keith had flown Scotty to the Voodoo Lounge St. Louie shows. They had a great relationship. Around 10pm, a large van pulls up and out comes Keith, his father, his daughter, his engineers, the shepards pie, Sunkist orange juice and once in the barn the tapes start rolling around midnight. By the morning, Scotty is on the floor almost comatose with his guitar strapped around him but still able to conduct the session lying down. Keith is still standing. Fontana on drums has a bag and catheter attached to him for a kidney problem , to which Keith remarks, “This guy is a real rock and roll soldier!” What’s remarkable is that these band guys are in their 70’s! One of Keith’s best vocals, ever! I’d like to add that the photo montage to the music track is a fine edit. Thanks so much for this great video!
